Tier 2 project update - September 2019

Submitted by Jake Munroe

Year 1 of Heartland’s Tier Two project, Maximizing cereal rye cover crop management for multiple benefits, is nearly complete.

Cooperators are comparing soybeans planted into standing rye vs. early terminated rye and a no rye control. Others are evaluating cover crop-based organic notill soybean production using roller crimpers. More than 70 people attended a twilight tour at the plot on the Israel farm, just outside of Drayton, on August 28.

Ted Taylor described the farm’s soil from a soil pit and the crowd had a look at the organic no-till soybeans side by side with the Israel’s regular 30 inch beans.

Stay tuned for project results this winter!
